    In intercultural munication,most mismunication does not arisethrough misprOnunciations,through poor uses of gram。 mar,or wrongspelling.However,the major sources of mismu’ nication inintercultural contexts result from differences in patterns ofdiscourse,which greatly depends on thought patterns.
    Kaplan(1966)put forward six cultural thought patterns afterexamining nearly seven hundred English essays written by ESLstudents.They are English,Semitic(Arabiclanguages),Oriental(Chinese,Japanese,Korean,etc.),Romance(French,Spanish,etc.),andRussian.Here we just focus on English and Oriental pat-terns.Kaplanclaims that English speakers,whose thought patterns have beenshaped by Greek and Roman philosophers,Medieval Eu-ropeans,and WestEuropean thinkers,use a predominantly linear paragraph organizationin expository texts,which shows directness,clarity andlogic.The“oriental”pattern,including Chinese,is an inward turningspiral that is viewed as indirect and circular approa-ches to thetopic.which is“off the point”,“out of focus”,and even“awkward”forEnglish natives.Kaplan iS the first one to state that people fromdifferent linguistic and cultural backgrounds or-ganize discoursedifferently,in ways that reflect their own language and culture.
