consolidate

v.使加固，使加強;(把……)聯為一體，合并

【例】With his new play, he has consolidated his position as the country’s leading dramatist.他新創作的劇本鞏固了他作為國內杰出劇作家的地位。

【構詞】con-+solid(堅實的)+-ate(使)→使牢固→鞏固

【同義替換】solidify, reinforce, merge, amalgamate

【派生】consolidation n.鞏固;合并

desperate

a.不顧一切的，鋌而走險的;絕望的，危急的

【例】If the failures of this world could realize how desperate half the present-day geniuses once felt, they would take heart and try again.世上的失敗者若能了解到當今的天才有半數一度感到過那么絕望，他們就會振作精神更加努力。

【構詞】desper(=despair絕望)+-ate(形容詞后綴)→絕望的

【同義替換】despairing, venturesome

【派生】desperately ad.不顧一切地 desperation n.不顧一切

awkward

a.笨拙的;尷尬的;使用不便的

【例】It is an awkward door and you have to bend down to go through it.這扇門很不方便，所以，你得彎著腰才能過去。

【同義替換】clumsy, unhandy; embarrassing

【派生】awkwardly ad.笨拙地;尷尬地 awkwardness n.笨拙;尷尬

【真題】Awkward or wordy phrasing or unclear sentences and paragraphs should be mercilessly poked and prodded into shape.

要毫不留情地挑出那些糟糕的、廢話連篇的用詞或不清楚的句子和段落，并進行仔細打磨。
